The Art of Cabaret Singing

An immersive five-night retreat where singers focus on vocal interpretation,
stage presence, and connecting with a live audience.

Retreat Dates

All Experience Levels

November 1 – 5, 2026

Intermediate to Expert

March 7 – 11, 2027

Cabaret is one of the most intimate art forms in music — just a singer, a song, and an audience close enough to see your eyes. This is an interactive, supportive week focused on vocal interpretation, stage presence, microphone technique, and the art of telling a story through a song. The week ends with a live cabaret showcase, in front of a small invited audience, where each singer performs a set they have built and refined during the week.

Two retreats are offered. The November session is open to singers at every level, from people who have always wanted to sing in front of an audience to working performers refining their craft. The March session is for intermediate to expert singers who want to deepen their interpretive work and develop a tighter, more polished set.

Please bring sheet music for 3–4 songs of varying styles (ballad, up-tempo, novelty) that you are familiar with but have not necessarily performed.

YOUR INSTRUCTORS

Sherri James Buxton & Bob Shepherd

Sherri James Buxton is an elegant interpreter of a wide range of genres, from standards and show tunes to jazz, delighting audiences with her warmth, depth, versatility, and flawless technique. She has appeared on and off Broadway, including the original Broadway production of Look to the Lilies, and got her first professional break at seventeen as The Girl in an off-Broadway production of The Fantastiks. Her musical theatre credits include Carousel, Oklahoma, Guys and Dolls, She Loves Me, Flower Drum Song, and The King and I.

As a cabaret performer, Sherri has followed Bette Midler at the Continental Baths and opened for Freddie Prinze, Jackie Mason, and Rodney Dangerfield. As a jazz singer, she has performed with Sheila Jordan and Billy Taylor at the "Jazz in July" international workshop and appeared at the Pittsfield Jazz Festival. In the Berkshires, she has presented three solo shows at The Colonial Theatre, where her CD Songs from the Great American Songbook was recorded live. Sherri has taught voice and cabaret for over twenty-five years. She holds a BME in music from Indiana University and a Master's in Education from Cambridge College.

Bob Shepherd has been a working pianist in New England for decades, playing jazz across the region from solo performances to big-band gigs. He especially enjoys accompanying singers on Broadway songs and jazz standards, and his ability to change keys and styles in the moment makes him a joy to work with. Bob is also an arranger and owns a recording studio in Dalton, MA. Among local musicians, he is considered "a musician's magician."

The Sessions

Nine working sessions over five days, building to a live cabaret showcase on the final evening

SESSION ONE

The Basics

Microphone technique and improvisation. Learning to be spontaneous and in the moment — the foundation everything else is built on.

SESSION TWO

Storytelling & the Importance of Lyrics

Cabaret is storytelling. We work on reading a lyric, finding its emotional spine, and crafting the story you are actually telling when you sing it.

SESSION THREE

Making a Song Your Own

Answering the questions every cabaret performer needs to answer: who, what, where, when, and why? The answers shape every choice you make on stage.

SESSION FOUR

Style

Finding your own unique style. Trying your songs in different keys and arrangements to see how each one changes what the song means.

SESSION FIVE

Thinking Outside the Box

Trying things a new way. The whole group sings the same song, each in their own way. You will hear options for your own songs you would never have come to on your own.

SESSION SIX

Song Selection & Choosing the Right Key

We like many songs, but not all of them are right for us. How to choose what shows off your best qualities — and how to find the key that lets the song actually breathe.

SESSION SEVEN

Talking to an Audience

The absence of a fourth wall. Being yourself between songs — the patter, the
eye contact, the moments of warmth that let an audience know you.

SESSION EIGHT

Putting It All Together

Forming sets with patter. Sequencing songs so the emotional arc carries.
Building the small show you will perform on the final evening.

SESSION NINE

Performance

A live cabaret showcase on the final evening. Each singer performs the set they have built and refined during the week, with Bob Shepherd at the piano.
